The Ukulele unit is hands down one of my all-time favorite manufacturing units to teach. It takes everything I want students to understand about manufacturing and brings it to life in the most engaging way possible. My classroom transforms into a full-on production floor, complete with an in-class assembly line—and the kids absolutely LOVE it.

Each student group has a specific role in the process. One team sorts and prepares the pieces, another attaches the head to the neck, another installs the tuning pegs, and so on. We even have shift leaders keeping production moving and quantity checkers making sure no parts are missing before the next step. The level of focus, teamwork, and accountability is unreal. While this project is meant for each student to build their own, I love that STEM101 allows you to take their lessons and make them your own! We still do every step aloing the way, it just bring the assembly line more to life.

What makes this unit so powerful is that students don’t just learn about manufacturing—they experience it. They see how every role matters, how mistakes impact the entire line, and how communication and quality control are essential in real-world production. Watching middle schoolers take their jobs seriously, problem-solve on the fly, and feel proud of the final product is truly incredible.

This unit is engaging, structured, and incredibly well thought out. It builds collaboration, responsibility, and real manufacturing skills in a way that sticks with students long after the unit ends. If you want a hands-on manufacturing experience that students will talk about all year, this is it.

I teach 8th grade science, and I used the STEM 101 Ukulele Kit as an end-of-the-year hands-on, minds-on project to revisit our learning about sound waves. At the end of the year, I intentionally circle back to key units we’ve covered, and this project was a perfect way to refresh and apply those concepts in a meaningful way.

The ukulele build kept students fully present, engaged, and motivated. It paired beautifully with our sound unit learning goals, allowing students to connect vibration, pitch, and sound production to a real instrument. Beyond the science content, the project naturally incorporated engineering, problem-solving, teamwork, design thinking, and building skills.

One of the best parts is that students get to take their ukuleles home. They were incredibly proud of what they built. There was singing, dancing, smiling, collaboration — and learning — all happening at the same time. Seeing students genuinely excited about science at the end of the year is not always easy to pull off, but this kit absolutely delivered.

This project was a huge win for both engagement and learning, and I would highly recommend it to any middle school teacher looking for a high-impact, memorable STEM experience.

My students know that they get to complete this project in 5th grade, but that doesn't stop them from starting to ask about it earlier. They are excited to start planning how they are going to design the outside. Are they going to stain it? paint it? I look forward to what I affectionately call, "Struggle Day." It is the day that I teach a room of 5th graders how to use a philips head screw driver and quite literally watch them problem solve and struggle for 45 minutes. I positively let them know that their hands aren't used to the motion and that they are practicing, that this is a new skill, and that any progress is movement towards completion. I also let them know that after this day, I come in and save them and tighten everything down with a power tool, so they know that as long as they give me effort and forward progress learning to use a new tool, I've got their back. They are SO PROUD when they get a few of those screws in and are even more excited when I let them know they get to take that screw driver home. We then spend the next couple months slowly tuning and learning to play the ukuleles for the Spring Concert. This has been an amazing tradition at my school and it is one that we look forward to every. single. year!
