NATIONAL STEM DAY 2026

Every child deserves the opportunity to discover what they can accomplish with a little guidance, the right materials, and time to figure things out.

As National STEM Day approaches on November 8, we're thinking about the experiences that make hands-on learning memorable: seeing an electrical circuit work for the first time, solving a difficult construction problem, or showing a finished project to someone at home.

For nearly two decades, STEM 101 has helped bring those experiences to students through practical STEM education. Working with tools and materials gives young people opportunities to develop useful skills, explore unfamiliar subjects, and become more confident in their ability to learn.

Why Hands-On STEM Learning Matters

Consider a student building an electrical circuit. They examine the components, work out how everything connects, and test their first attempt. If it doesn't work, they check the wiring, revisit the instructions, and make adjustments.

The activity gives them a practical introduction to electricity while encouraging observation, problem-solving, and patience. There's room for questions, too.

• Why does one connection work and another fail?

• What changes when a component is moved?

• Could the design be improved?

Questions like these make hands-on STEM learning an engaging way to put classroom concepts into practice.

Building Confidence Through Experience

Confidence often develops gradually when children are learning something new. A student who initially needs help using a tool may become comfortable after a few guided attempts. Another might find a new way to solve an engineering problem after talking it through with classmates.

STEM 101's educational project kits introduce subjects such as electronics, engineering, manufacturing, and health sciences through practical activities. Students can explore circuits, assemble a ukulele while learning about sound, or investigate how plants grow with a hydroponics project.

As students work through these activities, they gain experience making decisions, testing ideas, and learning from results. Completing a project gives them something tangible to look back on the next time they encounter a challenge.

A THOUGHT FOR PARENTS & EDUCATORS

When a child's first attempt doesn't work, try asking what they noticed and what they'd like to test next. A little room to investigate can make the learning experience richer.

Making STEM Education Accessible Beyond the Classroom

Children can explore STEM in all kinds of settings. A science project might happen at the kitchen table with a parent, during an after-school program, or alongside classmates working on an engineering challenge.

Access to appropriate materials and guidance helps make these experiences easier to offer. STEM 101 supports hands-on learning with educational project kits, guided lessons, curriculum resources, and programs for schools, homeschool families, and community organizations.

Our Missions and Mini Missions subscriptions also introduce new STEM topics through a series of projects, giving students more opportunities to practice skills and explore different interests over time.

Celebrating National STEM Day 2026

National STEM Day on November 8 is a chance for families, educators, and communities to make time for science, technology, engineering, and math.

It could be building a catapult, experimenting with different scents while making soap, measuring everyday objects around the house, or learning and practicing basic first aid techniques.

Ask children what they're noticing, encourage them to explain their choices, and give them time to figure out the next step. Even a short activity can introduce an interesting question worth exploring further.

We're looking forward to celebrating another National STEM Day with the families, educators, and organizations helping make hands-on learning possible.
